The Stanley Cup craze has found our shores, reaching a fever pitch at Christmas and continuing strong as it appears on shelves in shops like Brown Thomas this month. However, at €55 per cup and often sold out from some retailers, many of us are looking for an alternative water bottle to buy — but remember, the most sustainable option is the one you may already own, no matter how tempted you are to follow a trend.

I was in need of a new water bottle last year and opted for a ‘Sunbeam’ yellow one from the Ecoset and it ticks all my boxes. It's not too heavy to carry on a walk plus it has a handy carry strap on top, it fits in the car (albeit in the door rather than the cup holder of my Yaris), has a straw and not a fiddly twist cap, and really does keep your water cold all day — and it's Irish! I splashed out an extra couple of euro to get my name engraved on it too.

I had been searching for a good water bottle that was easy to clean and more importantly, that I could bring everywhere with me. I came across the 24oz Lululemon Back to Life Sport Bottle in Brown Thomas in Cork and while it was a little pricey, it ticked all of my boxes. It's lightweight and has a small handle that is attached to a twist-off cap, meaning it's spill-proof and also easy to carry around. The lid is dishwasher safe and detaches so cleaning is no problem. Plus, it keeps my water cold - and it looks good too.

I am a divil for misplacing water bottles so I've used a couple. I like Irish biz The Head Plan's Daily Drench bottle, it's never leaked and it's very aesthetically pleasing to look at. My only complaint it is it doesn't have time markings on it, and I am a sucker for bottles that do.

I've a few but the main one I tend to grab is a Decor 600ml. They can be bought in Home Store + More.

I've tried so many water bottles now and this one has lasted a good while — for a few reasons. I had a fancy matte black bottle that really did keep water cold but I kept mislaying it in my cavernous bag or on the floor of my car so I've given that up. And with three kids all in several activities each week and all leaving things in school lockers my bottles were always being 'borrowed' and not returned. So a shiny red bottle bearing my initial wreathed in flowers it is — it's a Carolyn Donnelly one from Dunnes Stores. Unlike the Kardashians, we don't all have the same first name initial in my family and apparently "only another mom would steal that one anyway" so I'm doing well with this bottle now — unless Carolyn herself wants it back!
