Test Drive: We take the Dyson Wash G1 for a spin

Dyson Wash The G1

I'd heard the Dyson Wash G1 is perfect for busy parents who contend with toddlers’ spills daily.

There are no tiny tots keen on regular food fights in our place — but what about families with four-legged furry members?

See, it’s when our six-month-old Pomeranian prances into the picture that the deft device shows just what it can do for us.

This is a day or so after I’ve started my road test — it’s got a run across the kitchen, hallway, sitting room and bathroom floors. They’re looking glossy and I’m feeling smug.

The Wash G1, engineered to clean hard floors, is easy to set up, straight out of the box. I click the handle into the body.

The water tanks detach at a click. I fill the top tank with clean water and once I’ve charged the battery, off I go. Easy-peasy. And, whisper it, fun.

But the real magic starts when I want to take it out for another spin the following day. I can’t find an excuse as the tiles are still gleaming.

Again — no toddlers around to toss cereal about and we grown-ups don’t have the energy. But our six-month-old pouncing pom sure does.

She’s quenched her thirst, but her thirst for mischief is insatiable — and she flings the rest of her drinking water everywhere.

She looks at us for approval — she’s the most hilarious pup she knows.

Mopping up the mess manually isn’t going to cut it — anything involving a cloth or

a paper towel equals a tug-of-war and more fun for Cocoa Bean.

Enter the Wash G1 and it sucks up the flood in moments. Cocoa Bean is about to be whisked into another room in case the clean-up commotion is traumatising for a canine but ends up staying put to watch the — sorry — floor show.

But as it transpires, she’s more curious than anything else.

Because despite its size, the G1 is quieter than a vacuum cleaner.

Now for the nitty-gritty: The button at the top lets me select between hydration levels and power — the lowest for hair, dust, and light spills and the highest for more stubborn stains.

After a cleaning session, pop the G1 back onto the charging dock and press the self-clean option so it can tackle the cleaning rollers.

Dirty water goes into the tank and hair and debris are caught in a red tray, which you slide out and empty into the bin or waste disposal.

There’s a bit of heft, yes — especially if you’re going to be toting it upstairs a lot — but for me, this was better than any mop and bucket.

It reminds me of an electric bike — as I propel the Wash G1 around my route, I feel I’m getting bang for my buck when it comes to effort.

The device makes quick work of everyday stains, smears and spills within moments of starting my perambulations from hallway to kitchen and bathroom Not only that but the floors dried fast.

It’s not something you’re going to be using to remove heavily stained items such as discoloured grouting, but remember this is a super-duper mop replacement — not a do-everything miracle.

Charging to 100% to use the first time took me about an hour and a half (it arrived almost half-charged).

A full charge lasts just over half an hour or so and I needed to change the water tank at least once per session (cleaning three rooms).

Of course, using it at max setting uses more water and more power (I tended to use max a lot).

The one-litre clean-water tank covers flooring up to 290 sq m. It is priced at €699.99.

ON THE TABLE

Tablescaping has topped the agenda in the lead-up to December — but what about those who’ve been thinking of splashing out on a new table?

Italian design house Connubia has come up with a range of super-elegant numbers. I’m smitten by the Elisse dining table by Connubia, priced from €2836.

Available at Kube Interiors, the Ellisse is a dynamic design with a wide, tapered central stem base that comes in a choice of lacquered metal finishes.

This contemporary ceramic table comes in fixed oval or extending rectangular sizes.

All dining tables available at Connubia and its sister company Calligaris, have extendable options making them ideal for entertaining guests and all tables and chairs are available in a variety of finishes and colours.
