This Brand Awards Year Bertazzoni Alone One The Kitchen Four Has

Italian job

It’s a good thing Italian kitchen brand Bertazzoni makes such spacious counters and islands — it needs all the room it can get for the gongs. The family-run company recently received its fourth prestigious prize this year.

The professional series 120cm induction range cooker with Teppanyaki grill scooped an A’Design Award — one of the world’s most influential design accolades. This follows a slew of awards for the Air-Tec cooker, also from the premium brand’s professional series, which clinched an iF Design Award 2024 in the ‘Kitchen Appliances’ category in April, and it was crowned Best of KBIS 2024 in the Style Statement: Kitchen grouping in February.

Super seat

Rearranging indoor-outdoor zones is paramount for me and my new canine companion these days.

A newly arrived puppy has really broadened our household's horizons in terms of space and time — anyone for 1am and 4am walkies around the lawn? So seeing news of Jysk’s garden clearance sale is giving me inspiration — furniture such as the Gjern hanging chair, pictured (was €499 now €175), looks like the ideal person-and-pom-friendly perch and what's even better, it's the type of seating that could be positioned on a porch and patio alike.

The sale starts today, Saturday, July 27, and runs until Wednesday, August 27, with up to 60% off all garden items, and giving shoppers time to browse for bargains to soak up what’s left of summer.

Minotaur in Mallow

We’ve always known there are all manner of mighty creatures roaming Cork. And if Macroom has its bull statue, then why can’t Mallow go one better with a Minotaur?

We’re all invited to follow the mythical thread to the north Cork town where West End Art Studios hosts its first art textile exhibition this August. ‘Follow The Red Thread’ will be officially opened at 6pm on Friday, August 9, by Cork-based textile artist Helen O’Shea. The exhibition’s title alludes to the Greek myth that tells of Ariadne, daughter of King Minos of Crete, who is associated with ingenuity and creativity. When Theseus went to slay the Minotaur, this princess helped him escape the labyrinth by giving him a ball of red thread.

The exhibition will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am-5pm from August 9 to August 25. Eight recent art textile graduates from Crawford College of Art and Design will showcase work at the event, which follows their graduate show, Ariadne’s Thread, held in the MTU Gallery at 46 Grand Parade in Cork City in June. Work will include Untitled by Laurie Manning, pictured. West End Art Studios is an artist-led voluntary art space.

Picture perfect

So many of us are using our own artwork and photography to decorate our homes — even snaps grabbed while on walkabout, phones in hand, often take pride of place on giant canvases above mantelpieces. Every wall can be a gallery space!

This week the Institute of Public Health reminds us that the deadline of its second ‘How We Age’ photography competition is approaching. Organisers seek images of older adults working, learning and volunteering in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The gallery of previous photos, from the first contest, in 2022, shows some gems, such as this photo, Ikki Keane, of John Schofield from Youghal, Co Cork, making a model boat. The competition is open for entries until August 16.

Cushion cuteness

Animal print will never, ever get old for me. How gorgeous is this faux-fur cushion? It’s €17.99 from TK Maxx.
