WEST CORK institution, Atkins DIY in the heart of Clonakilty and with a 150 year business pedigree has found a local buyer - West Cork Building Suppliers.
One a 0.6 acre town centre site with historic four-storey eight bay warehouse, Atkins DIY was put for sale in summer 2023 attracting widespread interest, said agent Kieran O’Gorman, including for residential development but found a business buyer who it is understood will initially at least use it for storage.
Buyers West Cork Builders are a family-owned entity, trading for over 25 years, from a large depot site on Park Road/N71/Clonakilty bypass: calls to the company for comment on the purchase have not been responded to.
It’s understood while there were extensive inquires on the profile Atkins site by the Waterfront development and with access to three streets plus the River Feagle, there was no interest in the opportunity site from the local authority.
With town centre zoning, it was open for a vast array of new uses, including residential, retail, other commercial, heritage uses, sheltered accommodation and tourism-related uses.
No guide price was cited but it’s likely it made close to the unofficial guide of €1 million.
Acquired by a management buy-out in the 1990s, John Atkins & Company was set up in 1876 by west Cork locals John Atkins and Joe Wolfe, later expanding with McKenzies added in 1898, with outlets opened in Carrigrohane, Fermoy, Midleton, Bandon and, briefly, in Dundrum, Tipperary.
Most outlets concentrated on the agricultural sectors, but Clonakilty prioritised hardware and building supplies, joining the Topline group in 1994.
Atkins site's purchase by West Cork Builders may see some continuity of ues, or offer storage and long-term development prospects.
