TARRANT’S Bar in Cobh is on the market for €650,000 following the decision by its owner George Tarrant to call time on his working life, after 20 years in the business.
One of a series of distinctive four-storey–over-basement buildings that flank either side of Roger Casement Square, the period property, which dates to around 1855, has a central location in Cobh town.
Close to where cruise liners dock and visitors embark, from both liners and from the port town’s busy railway station, it’s in a good location to capitalise on both the local and visiting tourist trade.
Run by George and his wife Gemma for two decades, the property comes with a fire certificate and a seven day license.
Operating as both a bar and an off-license, the terraced building was extended to the rear by previous owners. Accommodation on the upper floors includes three bedrooms, a sitting room/kitchen and a bathroom.
The pub, on the ground floor, has doors that fold back with a view of historic Roger Casement Square, while the cellar is substantial.
The off-license is run from the front section of the pub.
A spiral staircase to the rear leads to customer loos, which can also be accessed from the front of the pub via a steel staircase.
Selling Tarrant’s is Johanna Murphy of Johanna Murphy & Sons and she believes new owners have options, such as developing a restaurant.
“As the building includes accommodation, a chef could live overhead, which would solve the problem restaurants often have of trying to find accommodation for their chefs,” Ms Murphy said.
Tarrant’s is one of a number of pubs in Cobh town to come to market in recent times as their owners retire. The Mauretania was put on the market in September by owner John Griffin, with a guide price of €600,000. Ms Murphy, who is also handling the Mauretania sale, has seen some interest from the American market.
She’s also selling agent for The Quays Pub, right on the waterfront in Cobh, where the asking price has been slashed from €5m to €2.5m.
Cobh has seen a good deal of regeneration and investment in recent years, as well as the return of cruise ships in the wake of the global pandemic. Plans for a much improved public realm, which will take in Roger Casement Square, are also in the pipeline.
