Mona McSharry won Ireland's first medal of the Paris Olympics, claiming bronze by the smallest of margins in the 100m breaststroke final.

Also in the pool, Ellen Walshe finished eighth in the 400m individual medal while Daniel Wiffen secured his place in the 800m freestyle final after winning his heat. The final is on at 8:02pm on Tuesday evening.

The Olympics are over for the Irish women's sevens team after they lost to Australia at the quarter-final stage.

There was heartbreak for Liam Jegou in the canoe slalom final as he missed out on a silver medal due to incurring a two-second penalty after hitting the final gate on his run.

It took just nine minutes for Kellie Harrington to firmly dispel any doubts about her form as she opened her Olympic campaign with victory in the 60kg round-of-16

The Irish men's hockey team lost their second match of the Games, falling 2-1 to Australia.
