John Carroll has announced is retirement from from international basketball.

The 28-year-old Dubliner took over as Ireland captain from Kyle Hosford ahead of the Eurobasket pre-qualifiers two years ago. He was also part of the Ireland squad which won the European Championship for Small Countries in 2021, a tournament in which he finished as Ireland's top scorer.

“My time playing for my country has been incredible,” said the power forward.

“Taking over from Kyle as captain was a huge honour for me and I’ve enjoyed every moment on the court in green. I hope I’ve left the jersey in a better place for a very talented group of guys coming through.

“I want to thank all my coaches, staff, teammates, and the Irish fans, who have given me incredible support during my career.

"I’ll never forget the feeling of winning the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries at the Arena and now, I’m looking forward to seeing where the next generation can take us,”

News of Carroll's retirement comes shortly after his Ireland teammate Lorcan Murphy also called time on his international career.
