Tim O'Leary, former benefactor of the Mayo GAA, has called on GAA president Jarlath Burns to initiate an investigation into the Mayo County Board.
The county's annual convention takes place Wednesday evening.
Last weekend, the Sunday Independent revealed that O’Leary had contacted Revenue earlier this year about his concerns pertaining to Mayo GAA finances.
O'Leary makes no specific allegations in this statement but writes about "the wastage of funds and the profligate spending of our Board".
He writes: “The GAA oversees the greatest sporting organisation in Ireland which sits at the heart of the country’s unique and cherished culture. That the financial governance of this great organisation has become such a cause for concern is a slap in the face to our many volunteers that dedicate their time, energy and hard-earned money to make it possible for the sport we love to be played by so many. It’s now time for those who run the GAA at national level to do it ‘for the ordinary volunteers’ rather than allow it serve the chosen few. Those who run the GAA at national level do not own the GAA and those who have run, and currently run GAA in Mayo do not own Mayo.
“I now call on Mr Jarlath Burns, President of the GAA, to approve a full independent financial investigation into the Financial Affairs of Mayo GAA.
"My firm of Forensic Accountants are available to assist with this work at no cost to Mayo GAA, We have already undertaken a full review of the audited accounts from 2012 to 2023. On receipt of the 2024 Draft Accounts, we will complete our work and issue it to the relevant authorities and to the supporters of Mayo GAA worldwide."
