Patrician Academy Mallow powered into the quarter finals of the TUS Corn Uí Mhuirí on Wednesday night seeing off a valiant but utterly outgunned CBS Mitchelstown at a bitterly cold Kildorrery.
Last year’s semi-finalists showed they have lost none of their appetite for success reeling nine of the 13 point winning margin required on the night to secure their place directly into the last eight – De La Salle Macroom now have to accept a place in the preliminary quarters after their win over Killorglin earlier in the day.
Mallow came into this tie on the back of one win and a draw from their opening two games, a battling draw with Macroom in Round 2 kept them in the hunt for progression after blitzing Killorglin on the opening day of the season.
For their part, CBS rolled into the tie in good shape after bouncing back from a defeat in the opening round to see off Killorglin in Round 2 – all to play for heading into this one for both sides.
For the Academy, the hefty tally of 3-11 on the night was nothing more than they deserved but the manner of this win really was secured thanks to a brilliant defensive effort with Gearoid Daly, Cian Cooney, Paddy and Aaron Murphy as well as Eddy Walsh all putting in credible shifts, the Murphy cousins very brilliant in the full back line with Cooney bagging the Academy’s first goal and working hard all game.
Up front, Cathal Corbett, Cathal Mullins and Dylan O’Connell all had success with Mallow’s midfielders Padraig Britton and Jack Roche also holding sway in the middle.
For Mitchelstown, Cian English was the side’s main threat with Diarmuid O’Brien and Conor English all capable of causing problems.
The Patrician Academy dominated this game from the off and were 1-6 to 0-0 up at the interval, Cooney’s goal on nine minutes the major moment of the opening half.
Mallow continued to push on after the break in search of the 13 point gap that would put them into the quarters with goals from O’Connell and O’Shea sealing the deal.
The English boys, Cian and Conor hit back with five points between them in the second half to put a gloss of respectability on the board but this one comfortably went the way of the better side.
Mitchelstown’s players were not found wanting on the effort stakes but on the night the Academy had all the answers and will be a side few will want to draw as this competition heads into the business end of things.
