Current All-Star goalkeeper Nickie Quaid is a major doubt for Limerick’s 2025 season after suffering a tear to an anterior cruciate ligament.
Limerick GAA confirmed on Sunday that the Effin man suffered the setback. The statement read: “The Limerick senior hurling management wish to confirm that Nickie Quaid underwent a scan on Friday last that confirmed he has suffered an ACL injury. We wish Nickie the very best in his recovery and assure him of our total support in the coming months.”
Quaid, 35, is expected to undergo an operation, which would rule him out of the county’s Allianz Hurling League Division 1 campaign and defence of their Munster senior hurling championship.
David McCarthy of Glenroe and Patrickswell’s Jason Gillane will likely be vying to replace the five-time All-Ireland SHC winner who won his third All-Star last month.
After Seán Finn, Mike Casey, Peter Casey and Richie English, Quaid is the fifth Limerick player to suffer a cruciate tear in recent years.
Captain Declan Hannon was also sidelined in 2023 because of a knee issue. Quaid’s injury means Limerick are likely to require a new regular goalkeeper for the first time in 15 years – son of the late Limerick goalkeeper Tommy and cousin of another county netminder Joe, Quaid made his senior debut in 2010.
