CBS Mitchelstown bounced back in style from their defeat in the opening round of the Corn Uí Mhuirí as they deservedly defeated IS Killorglin at Tom Creedon Park in Macroom on Wednesday afternoon.
A couple of Killorglin goals just before the half time break set up an interesting second period but, in the end, the Cork school, led by Diarmuid O’Brien and Oisin Power, rallied to claim the victory and inflict a second loss in a row – conceding the same score again in the process - on their Group 4 opponents.
"It gives us a chance anyway. It's our first year in it and it's great for the school, it's great for the lads to win at this level, to get a taste for it now going into the next game," admitted Mitchelstown manager Cillian Bohane.
After suffering a 1-15 to 2-5 loss to De La Salle College Macroom three weeks ago, Mitchelstown were determined to put things right here.
And they made the perfect start as by the end of the first quarter they had raced into a 1-5 to no score lead with O’Brien firing over a couple of excellent frees before midfielder Harrison Conway combined cleverly with Cian English and expertly drilled the ball into the bottom left corner.
O’Brien soon raised their second green flag of the game to put CBS in complete control but Killorglin, who were beaten 3-13 to 2-5 by Patrician Academy Mallow in Round 1, refused to give up and two superbly taken, quick-fire goals from Giovanni McCarthy and Patrick O’Donnell got them right back in contention before the break, 2-6 to 2-2.
But Mitchelstown's management team used the interval wisely as they regrouped and started the second period in a similar manner to how they started the first.
"We got together at half-time and we said 'we just need to start getting back to basics, working hard again and working for each other. They did that, delighted with them and delighted for them," added Bohane.
Daire English settled any lingering nerves with a fine point shortly before full-forward Oisin Power all but sealed the victory when he slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, 3-7 to 2-2.
The Kerry school would put a run of three points without reply together, with Tomas Joy leading the way, but it was goals they needed rather than points as Mitchelstown continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over to secure an important win heading into the crucial final round of fixtures.
