A great team performance helped Ballintemple claim the Allianz DF1 title with a 5-4 to 1-5 victory over Greenmount in the first of four Sciath na Scol finals held at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Tuesday.
It was a very close first half in terms of possession, but two quick goals from Balllintemple's Jamie King and Sam McCarthy gave them a two goal-lead at the break, 2-3 to 0-3.
Ballintemple got off to a great start in the second period as Peter McLaughlin slotted past the goalkeeper, having got on the end of a great pass by Charlie Mahony before Daniel Kiely closed the gap when he kicked over for Greenmount.
A minute later, Greenmount’s Calvin Aherne showed great skill before he unleashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net to make it 3-3 to 1-4.
But Ballintemple ended the game as a contest when Max Goold raised a green flag moments before Charlie Mahony’s long-range effort hit the back of the net.
The second final produced one of the greatest games and comebacks seen at Sciath na Scol as Greenmount claimed the DGF1 title with a superb 6-5 to 5-4 triumph over Scoil Padre Pio.
The Churchfield school appeared to have ran away with the title as two goals from Abi Hetherington, who was just outdone by an Ally O’Sullivan hat-trick, gave them a 5-3 to 1-4 lead early in the second half.
But huge credit must go to Greenmount, who were absolutely superb in this half with Aoibhe Hartnett, Taylor Ahern, Emily Wallace, and Zoey Curran immense.
While Hetherington got a late point for Padre Pio, a goal apiece from Emily Wallace and Mia O’Sullivan, 1-1 from Ahern and a brace from Curran were enough to give Greenmount a hard-fought victory.
Then in the third final, Senan Ring inspired Frankfield to the DF3 trophy with an impressive victory over Ballinspittle in a ten-goal thriller, 5-12 to 5-2.
Despite the excellent Donnchadh Fahy scoring four of his side's five goals - the other coming from Darragh Moloney - great finishes to the net by Dylan Murnane (2), Darragh Field, Tom Butler and Ring, who also claimed five points, helped their side land the silverware.
In the fourth and last final of the day, Aghada lifted the DGF3 cup with the narrowest of wins over Dungourney, 5-0 to 4-2.
Nicolette McSweeeney (2), Kate Twomey, Ellie O’Doherty and Lauren Hartnett were the goalscorers for Aghada to ensure they just about overcame the challenge of Dungourney, who responded in vain through Faye McSweeney (1-2), as well as goals from Sarah Coady, Calina Crowley and Meabh Smiddy.
