The reigning champions are through to the Harty Cup knockout stages as Nenagh CBS rifled seven goals past a Rochestown College side that ended with 13 men.
All-Ireland minor medallist Eoghan Doughan blasted 2-7, netting both goals from placed balls and creating two more majors. Joe O’Dwyer tacked on another 2-2, while substitutes Eoin Garrigan and Eoin Grace both hit the net shortly after their introductions.
Having drawn their opener, Nenagh now top the three-team Group 4 and can only be displaced by Midleton CBS bettering this 21-point winning margin. For their part, Roco can still progress if they overturn Midleton in the final round.
Having fought back within six points, the Cork school were outscored by 5-3 to 0-3 between there and the finish as Diarmuid O’Donoghue (second yellow) and goal-scorer Brian Lynch (straight red) received their marching orders.
Roco began with a strong wind at their backs and translated that into a fast start. Mark O’Brien (who finished with 0-9) slung over the opener from the throw-in, Lynch landed the second, and after an O’Dwyer response, O’Brien slotted his second from play.
That was the best they would offer as Nenagh got a stranglehold on their puck-out, their supply lines, and the match.
Their ferocious work rate repelled Roco attacks. It began from the front, forcing two overcarrying calls for Doughan to tap over. Both first-half goals were sourced from turnovers on the opposition 21.
In the 25 minutes to half-time, they outscored Roco by 2-9 to 0-1.
An acute attempt from captain Darragh Treacy was saved by Noah Duane but three Doughan placed balls gave Nenagh their first lead.
They extended it with the opening goal in the 15th minute. Brian O’Meara interrupted Roco playing around with the sliotar at the back and Doughan freed Austin Duff to scoop home. They led 1-4 to 0-3.
After an O’Brien free, Nenagh struck for their second goal inside four minutes. O’Meara was again the disruptive influence, robbing the keeper and floating a pass for O’Dwyer to finish.
They necklaced the next six points, including three for Doughan and one each for the full-forward line of Duff, O’Meara, and O’Dwyer. 2-10 to 0-4 at half-time.
Turning into the breeze, Roco showed notable spirit and shooting efficiency to close within six points by the 40th minute. The classy O’Brien accounted for four points either side of Lynch’s 36th-minute goal, a daisy-cutter after midfield partner Fionn O’Keeffe’s smart flick.
An Odhran O’Donovan point helped to make it 2-12 to 1-9.
But from a long puck-out, Doughan got in behind and absorbed a couple of hits before being brought down by Lynch for a penalty. The Moneygall marksman rattled the net.
O’Donoghue was sent off in the 43rd minute but Roco initially kept plugging away with Charlie Hanratty their fourth forward on the board and O’Brien adding his eighth.
The floodgates opened in the final 10 minutes. It began when O’Meara again turned over a Roco defender. Once his shot was saved, O’Dwyer followed in to finish.
Their substitutes exerted their influence with a first-touch point for Emmet Jones followed by Daniel McKelvey and Eoin Garrigan combining for a shot that dropped under the crossbar. 5-15 to 1-11 after 54 minutes.
There was time for two more. O’Dwyer hit the net but only after play was whistled back for a foul. Regardless, Doughan reloaded from the free to register their sixth.
With Roco then reduced to 13, Grace volleyed home the final flourish and Doughan was denied a hat-trick from a stoppage-time free.
