Clonakilty CC brushed aside the challenge of Intermediate School Killorglin, thanks to a powerful second half display in the Munster Colleges Frewen Cup (U-17A Football) semi-final.
It was a surprise based on the first half display from both sides that Clonakilty took over in the third quarter and after ISK had scored the opening point of the second half. But for the next ten minutes Clonakilty, owing to some powerful running by centre forward Jack Byerley, hit the Kerry side with 1-5 without reply and that effectively decided the game in Clon’s favour as Killorglin lost their way.
The opening half was even enough with Calum Galvin and Tomas Joy dominating at midfield for ISK while both Colm Anthony Evans and Charlie Griffin looked dangerous up front.
The sides exchanged goals in the 12th minute with Clonakilty’s top scorer Jamie Collins finishing to the net, but, from the kick-out, Tomas Joy replied in kind for ISK.
ISK took the lead in the 18th minute with a well worked goal, brilliantly finished by Evans as they moved 2-2 to 1-3 in front. Rory Twohig and Byerley leveled the contest by the 24th minute with points but ISK were soon two clear with points from Jamie Flynn and Evans.
Byerley then reduced the gap with a free from close to the sideline before disaster struck ISK in the 28th minute. Keeper Corey Campion was caught in possession on his own forty five, he lost the ball and Riley O’Donovan rolled the ball from distance into an empty net, as all of the ISK players were not at home.
This meant that despite a Joy free on the stroke of half time, Clonakilty led 2-6 to 2-5 at the interval and that was tough on Killorglin.
An early Joy point leveled the contest within a minute of the restart but it was merely a mirage as Clonakilty assumed complete control, with Byerley, Tom Whooley and Jamie Collins taking over. Two points from Byerley were followed by goals from the same player and another from Collins and suddenly it was 4-12 to 2-8 at the end of the third quarter.
Killorglin tried hard but it was not their day as Clonakilty CC powered to victory with late points from Collins (2) and Byerley and now they will face St Brendan's College Killarney in the Frewen Cup this Friday, to try and win a first in their history.
