Kilkenny legend Brian Cody saw his James Stephens side relgated for the first time in 69 years on Saturday after defeat to Glenmore in the Kilkenny SHC relegation final.

The city side lost out on a scoreline of 3-17 to 3-12 after playing 45 minutes with 14 minutes, thanks to a first-half red card.

The Village looked to be up against it against a Glenmore side playing without Eoin Murphy, as they trailed 1-4 to 0-3 and were reduced to 14 men in the first period.

But goals from Luke Scanlon, Tadgh O’Dwyer and Eoin Guilfoyle saw James Stephens go in two points up at half time.

Cody's side enjoyed the benefit of a strong wind in the second half but failed to add to their goal tally and were overtaken by Glenmore, who ultimately earned a five-point victory after a solid performance.

Next year will be the first time since 1955 that the famous city side won't be playing senior hurling on Noreside.

Glenmore - Alan Murphy (0-7, 0-6 frees, 0-1 65); Charlie Phelan (1-2); Ger Aylward (1-1); Ethan Phelan (1-0); Ciaran Kirwan, Cathal Beirne (0-2 each); Micheál Harney, Billy Reid, Ian Byrne (0-1 each).

James Stephens - Cian Kenny (0-6, frees); Eoin Guilfoyle (1-1); Luke Scanlon, Tadhg O’Dwyer (1-0 each); Ed McDermott, Ed Lauhoff (0-2 each); Ross Whelan (0-1).
