TJ Ryan: Don't turn hurling management into Premier League musical chairs

The Dalo Live Roadshow parked up at the Clayton Silver Springs Hotel Thursday night, ostensibly to preview the All-Ireland semi-finals, though hurling’s fast-moving managerial merry-go-round had to get a thorough spin first.

Seven-time All-Ireland winner Brian Hogan says Henry Shefflin has resurfaced on the Kilkenny old-timers WhatsApp group, now he has finished with Galway. And he wasn’t surprised with his old pal’s decision, given the traveling involved to the west.

And what about Davy? Mark Landers gave the merry-go-round a mischievous nudge. “If Clare don’t happen to get through this weekend, could there be a position there?” Dalo countered that one: “If John Kiely happens to achieve the five in a row, could he say my time is done?”

Henry has already ruled out taking Davy’s old spot in Waterford and TJ is getting a small bit dizzy with all the permutations. "I wouldn’t like to see Premier League-style musical chairs. I wouldn't like to see fellas swapping everywhere.”

It was pointed out that Cork managers played their part in Limerick over the years.

“In fairness they helped us get to where we are,” TJ accepted.

Landers was still joining the dots. “If Micheál O’Donoghue goes back to Galway... that leaves a vacancy in Dublin.

“Did you leave a little bit before your time Dalo?”

But podcast listeners can rest easy. “Ah I got too fond of this stuff.”
