Pádraig Harrington made a bright start and held on to land the inaugural Simmons Bank Championship in Arkansas on Sunday night.

The Dubliner made four birdies on the front nine holes and did enough in the end to win his third PGA Tour Champions event of the season, which saw him climb seven spots and up to fourth place in the playoff standings ahead of next week's season finale at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Harrington started the final round as co-leader with New Zealand's Steven Alker and then shot a score of 5-under-par 67 to finish at 17-under 199 to keep him two strokes ahead of South Korea's Y.E. Yang

“My intention when I was a young guy was to play amateur golf,” began Harrington shortly afterwards.

“I only turned pro because I was beating the guys who were turning pro. But I've never looked back. I've run with that ball and golf has been very good for me.

“It doesn't get old though winning, I've got to say. Hitting those shots wasn't just about winning this tournament, it was about kind of reliving the past glories. I'm not saying validating past glories, but certainly reliving it.

"Hey, I did this once and I was pretty good at it and I'm not too bad at it now.”
