Apex Global Resources have come a long way in the last three years, with the recruitment specialists experiencing steady growth in that period of time, both internally and externally.
With a team of ten people supporting an enterprise with a steadily growing footprint: on a daily basis there are 150 to 200 contractors on-site around Ireland and beyond. Apex has provided support personnel in Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Germany in 2024 and is actively looking to expand further into Europe in particular over the coming twelve months.
Apex’s managing director, Sean McGrath, sounds an upbeat note about the company’s plans: “I know there’s some uncertainty about the international market at the moment but we are looking forward to 2025 with optimism.
“We already have a presence in mainland Europe primarily the Nordic regions, We’re optimistic about the level of opportunity available in Europe, based on the experience of the personnel we’re providing all over the continent. It’s that optimism that’s driving our expansion plans.”
Readers will be familiar with McGrath’s displays on the hurling field — he enjoyed a stellar career with club Glen Rovers and in the red jersey of Cork, culminating in an All-Ireland senior hurling medal in 1999. Since retiring from the playing field McGrath has been involved in team management, including stints with the Cork minor and senior hurling teams.
“Playing at intercounty level is a great experience on every level but it’s also a situation where you’re really looking after yourself, to a great extent. Even though you’re in a team environment your primary responsibility is to get yourself right.
“Management and coaching are different, and there are very obvious parallels with recruitment. In both cases you’re looking to match people with roles which have certain responsibilities, and that’s something which cannot be treated casually.
“Certainly sports management puts you in a place where you’re making those kinds of evaluations on an ongoing basis, finding the right person for a specific role. In that sense, it’s not too different to what you’re trying to do in recruitment.”
There’s an obvious need to innovate and upskill with players in any sport — it’s a truism that if a team is to remain competitive and successful it must improve, a lesson McGrath says can be applied to recruitment as well.
“As a company we believe in constant improvement — that might sound like the most obvious point to make but resting on your laurels is a guarantee that you won’t remain competitive.
“I wouldn’t overdo the parallels with sport a lot of the time, but certainly no matter what level of success you achieve in your chosen sport you can’t sit back and feel you have enough done. You always try to win more, and in the same way we’re always looking for new opportunities, new challenges — and we’re always keen to welcome new clients.
“That doesn’t mean neglecting your loyal clients, of course. We believe our focus on providing clients with the best value for money is appreciated by them, and the ultimate endorsement of that is seen in the high volume of repeat business we get from those clients.”
That also goes for the candidates using Apex to find work.
“We’d like to think that over the years we’ve been able to build a good reputation among those looking for work, a reputation for always looking out for our candidates’ best interests,” says McGrath.
“Again, that’s something you’d expect any company in our space to say, but we’re happy to see the proof in the pudding when we see a high volume of our new candidates come to us by direct referrals.
“We’re always happy to invite people to come and join our talent network — if they want to work with a team which is dedicated to providing them with the highest quality service, then getting in touch with us is their next step.”
