At MSD Ireland, we are committed to hiring key talent and have made remarkable strides in expanding our hiring strategies over the last number of years, with nearly 1,000 roles filled in 2024.

Our focus is twofold: recruiting experienced professionals in fields such as engineering, science, and supply chain, while also placing a significant emphasis on Future Talent programmes which encompass a wide range of practical experiences, including graduate programmes, internships, apprenticeships, summer student placements, and transition year opportunities.

As a company with seven locations across Carlow, Dublin, Meath, Tipperary, and Cork, these programmes offer participants an in-depth understanding of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland with hands-on, practical experience and mentorship from top experts in the industry.

Barry Comerford, Operator in MSD Ballydine, shares his experience

What did you study, why, and how did it lead to your current role?

Personally, I've never attended college; instead, I come from a different educational background that reflects a time when formal education wasn't as prevalent for many. My journey has been shaped by practical experience rather than traditional academic pathways.

Growing up as a farmer's son instilled a strong work ethic in me, which I further developed while working as an operator in a tannery, as a labourer on building sites, and even during a period as a professional actor. Each of these roles imparted essential skills, particularly in teamwork and collaboration — values that resonate with MSD, where we emphasise that we ‘never let a teammate fail.’ These diverse experiences have equipped me with the capabilities necessary to excel within my current role as an operator at MSD.

Was there any particular reason that you chose the course instead of a college degree?

In my case, the practical life skills I gained were invaluable compared to formal academic credentials. For example, my experience as a pub owner taught me essential problem-solving skills and how to be solution oriented. This was critical in developing the confidence to identify issues and propose effective solutions.

Unlike a college degree, my diverse career experiences have fostered the adaptability that I leverage in my role as an Operator where innovation is crucial when working on new projects.

How did it equip you with the skills you needed — and how did those skills help you get to where you are today?

Through my own journey, I learned that skills acquired from various jobs—like being solution-oriented and motivated—are transferable across different roles. The supportive environment at MSD encourages me to express my individuality, which has proven essential as I engage with diverse teams. By embracing my unique skill set and being encouraged to be myself and speak up, I've been able to contribute significantly to the development of a new manufacturing facility in Ballydine, where creativity and collaboration are vital.

Anything else you'd like to add?

I can attest that embracing a non-traditional route can lead to fulfilling opportunities. The skills I've acquired along the way—whether from teamwork, problem-solving, or adaptability—have all contributed to my success at MSD as an Operator. I encourage others to consider these alternative pathways and recognise that valuable lessons can be learned from every experience, ultimately shaping one’s career in meaningful ways.
