An All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer has been selected to run for Fine Gael in the upcoming general election.
The party selected Billy O’Shea, who won the All-Ireland in 1997 with Kerry, at a selection convention in Killarney earlier this evening.
Mr O’Shea, a Killorglin-based auctioneer, will replace outgoing TD Brendan Griffin on the ticket for Fine Gael.
“As an auctioneer and publican, as well as having worked in the banking and veterinary sales sector, I feel that I have the diverse experience in engaging with the public and business sector to fulfil the requirements sought by the people of Kerry,” Mr O’Shea said.

“I am passionate about representing the people of Kerry and ensuring that their needs are achieved at a national level.”
Mr O’Shea played with the Kingdom throughout the 90s, captaining the team in 1996, before Kerry won the All-Ireland in 1997.
Since 2002, he has also worked as a pundit for Radio Kerry.
A total of 17 Fine Gael TDs who won seats for the party in 2020 have since announced they will not contest the upcoming general election, almost half of all their elected Dáil members.
