The hero Deliveroo rider who intervened to stop the stabbing of children in Dublin last November is to contest the local elections for Fianna Fáil.

Caio Benicio said he believed politics was the best way to make a difference in people’s lives.

Mr Benicio is set to run for the party in the Dublin North Inner City ward.

On his priorities if he is elected in June, Mr Benicio said that he wanted to place emphasis on road safety, citing his own experience as a Deliveroo driver.

In the aftermath of the Parnell Square stabbing, Mr Benicio was at the centre of a GoFundMe which raised over €360,000 for him.

Fianna Fáil Senator Mary Fitzpatrick said she came into contact with Mr Benicio after the attack, and that he wants to play a “greater role” in his community.

“Caio is making his life here and he wants to be, I suppose, a greater part of the community. He’s obviously hugely valued at the school community here.

“Before that, he was working in the gig economy. He’s living in East Wall, like he understands the city.”

Mr Benicio had previously run his own business in Brazil before moving to Ireland.

“He has a lot to offer in terms of being a strong voice on Dublin city council, so he thinks this is the logical next step for him, you know, continue to help people and he sees politics as a way of doing it.”
