A motorist in Cork has been caught going nearly 200km/h on a stretch of road that has seen multiple collisions in recent months.
Officers from the Cork West Road Policing Unit clocked the driver speeding at 192km/h on the N22 in Crookstown.
They said that a court date would now await the driver.
If you drive over the speed limit, you will get three penalty points and a fixed charge fine of €160. If you do not pay the fine within 28 days, it increases to €240, with further increases on repeated non-payments.
In October 2023, a woman in her 80s died after a crash involving two cars and an articulated lorry on the same stretch of road at Crookstown.
So far this year, 70 people have lost their lives on Irish roads - an increase of 17 on this time last year.
Irish roads saw their worst year for nearly a decade, with 185 deaths in 2023 — a 14% increase on 2022's figures.
Road Safety Minister Jack Chambers has said that if the trends so far in 2024 continue, there will be "well over" 200 fatalities.
