The funeral of Ian Bailey is expected to take place in his beloved West Cork in the coming days.
No funeral arrangements have yet been made, following his death in Bantry after collapsing on a street in the town on Sunday.
Mr Bailey is survived by his sister Kay Reynolds, who lives in the UK, and has no next of kin living in Ireland.
His funeral wishes are not known and a decision will have to be made on whether his remains will be buried or cremated.
His body remains in the morgue at Bantry General Hospital this morning.
His solicitor, Frank Buttimer, said: “My belief is that he always wanted to remain in Ireland following his death and that his remains would be interred here.”
The office of the coroner has been notified of the death. There will be no autopsy because of the health problems he had suffered in recent months, including two heart attacks last September.
He had spoken in recent weeks about fearing he would not live long enough to see his name cleared of involvement in the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier.
In May 2019, Mr Bailey was found guilty in his absence of the murder of the well-known film producer and a 25-year sentence was imposed. However, over a year later, the High Court ruled that Mr Bailey would not be surrendered to France following the issuing of a European Arrest Warrant for him.
A cold case review of the murder is being conducted by gardaí.
