Shannon Airport has reopened following its temporary closure on Sunday night due to "unexpected heavy fog."

The airport was forced to shut down around 11pm on Sunday night but a spokesperson confirmed that normal operations resumed as of 1pm today.

In a statement, a spokesperson for The Shannon Airport Group said: “We are pleased to announce that Shannon Airport has now reopened and resumed normal operations as of 1.00pm. 

"However, we anticipate there will be some disruptions to the flight schedule throughout the day, and we regret any inconvenience this may cause to our passengers."

Passengers travelling today are advised to check with their respective airlines for the most up-to-date information on their flights.

"Our airport staff and airline partners will continue to work to minimise any further delays or disruptions, and we appreciate your understanding at this time.”

The airport temporarily shut due to excessive fog, meaning a number of flights were canceled, diverted or delayed.

The airport announced the closure on X, formerly Twitter, early on Monday It said: "Due to unexpected heavy fog conditions during a period of essential taxiway maintenance work, Shannon Airport remains temporarily closed.

"As a result, flights in and out of Shannon Airport may be cancelled or delayed this morning, Monday 9th Oct."

Passengers have been advised to check their flight status directly with the airline in advance of travelling to the airport. The runway is expected to re-open later this morning once fog clears.

“We will continue to update passengers across our social media channels," a spokesperson said. 

Since 11pm on Sunday night, nine arrival flights into Shannon Airport have been cancelled.

They include seven Ryanair flights from Manchester, Fuerteventura, London Stansted, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Malta and Porta, and two Aer Lingus flights from New York and Boston.

So far on Monday, two Aer Lingus flights from Shannon to London Heathrow have also been cancelled.

Four flights due to arrive at the airport on Monday morning have also been delayed.

They include a United Airlines flight from Newark, and Ryanair flights from Beziers, London Stansted and London Gatwick.

Three departing flights have also been delayed – two Ryanair flights to London Stansted and London Gatwick and also a United Airlines flight to Newark.

Met Éireann has said there will be "mist and fog in many areas this morning" but it will "gradually clear with hazy sunshine developing".

However, it will stay misty in some coastal areas throughout the day, the forecaster added.
