A woman has died following a collision involving a lorry in Co Cork on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred at approximately 3.45pm on Main Street, Charleville.
Councillors had earlier called for a relief road to take heavy good vehicles (HGVs) away from the centre of the town.
The woman, who was in her 70s, was a pedestrian and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries to persons have been reported.
The road at Main Street, Charleville, is currently closed and the services of Forensic Collision Investigators have been requested. Local diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Main Street area of Charleville between 3:30pm and 4:00pm are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
The collision is the second fatal crash to occur in the area in the last month.
In April, an elderly man died following a collision with a lorry on the main street in Charleville. He was named locally Patrick (Pat) Galvin and was described as a man who everyone liked.
Monday's accident came just hours after Cork County Council’s director of roads said he would ask TII (Transport Infrastructure Ireland) to seek ways of diverting HGVs from Charleville’s town centre due to the number of elderly pedestrians in particular who’ve been killed there.
There have been eight killed on the town’s main street in the last 10 years by HGVs.
Padraig Barrett informed a meeting of the council’s Northern Division that he would write to TII seeking it also review traffic calming measures on the approaches to Charleville.
Fianna Fáil councillor Ian Doyle said urgent action is needed to prevent further deaths. He said three of the town’s five pedestrian crossings in its main street are inadequate, mainly because the flashing lights are often out of action.
He said the council’s County Development Plan proposes a relief road for the town, especially to take HGVs out of its centre and this now needs to be fast-tracked, especially as the upgrading and bypassing of Charleville with the planned N20/M20 Cork to Limerick road could be years away.
Fianna Fail councillor Bernard Moynihan believes he “will be long gone” before that upgrade happens and said it is imperative that Charleville be bypassed as a matter of urgency to prevent more fatalities.
“We need to ensure all pedestrian crossings are working correctly. It’s absolutely critical and we need to fasttrack safety improvements with TII as a matter of extreme urgency,” Fine Gael councillor John Paul O’Shea added.
