Suspects have been identified in the garda investigation into the death of a woman in Mallow.
The body of Paula Canty was found in a block of apartments in Mallow on Friday.
Ms Canty, 31, originally from Kinsale, had been living in an apartment in the Belfry, close to the gates of Mallow castle, in recent months. Previously, she had also lived in Cork city. She would have turned 32 on January 6.
The alarm was raised this morning and when officers arrived at the scene, they found the woman in the property with fatal injuries.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. It is understood she had suffered stab wounds. She had suffered visible injuries to her chest area and blood was found at the scene.
Gardaí have already gathered information about her life, including in Mallow, and people she was associated with.
Her family mourned her loss at their Kinsale home last night.
A post-mortem is due to take place at 10am this morning in Cork city mortuary and gardaí will await its results before deciding whether or not to formally upgrade their investigation.
A lone garda stood sentry at the entrance to the apartment block on Friday evening as a forensics team worked inside. The door into the building was open but was sealed off to the public with a garda tape.
The emergency services were alerted by a person in the house, according to gardaí.
Gardaí conducted door-to-door enquiries and are also understood to be harvesting CCTV footage from neighbouring businesses and premises in a bid to trace the woman's last known movements and to identify those she was with.
Locals were shocked by the news of the woman's death, with one woman saying she had seen an ambulance at the property on Friday morning but did not become aware until later in the day that a woman had died in suspicious circumstances.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them and are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Bridewell Lane, Mallow, Co Cork between 9pm on January 2 and 10am on January 3.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
