A man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 21-year-old woman in a hit-and-run incident in Co Limerick over the weekend.

Marguerita Sheridan died after a van ploughed into a set of gates she was standing beside at a property in Rathkeale at around midday on Saturday afternoon.

Ms Sheridan had given birth to her first child, a son, just three weeks ago.

After the incident, Ms Sheridan was rushed to University Hospital Limerick where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the vehicle involved failed to remain at the scene.

On Monday, gardaí confirmed that a man had been arrested as part of their investigations into the incident.

A van believed to have been involved in the hit-and-run was also recovered and will now be subject to a technical examination, gardaí said.

The arrested man, who is in his 40s, is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Co Limerick.

Investigating gardaí continue to appeal for any witnesses to the incident on Saturday.

Any road users or pedestrians with camera footage who were in the Rathkeale area between 11.30am and 1pm on Saturday, December 21 are asked to come forward.
