The Crawford College of Art and Design campus and library in Cork City has been forced to close for up to two days following a fire during the heavy rainfall over the weekend.
The Munster Technological Institute (MTU) facility was closed on Monday and will likely remain closed on Tuesday while the damage is assessed and repairs are carried out.
MTU said the fire was caused by an electrical fault which occurred during the heavy rainfall in Cork on Saturday evening. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
The building’s recently upgraded fire alarm system performed effectively, a spokesman said, detecting the fire at approximately 9pm and alerting the fire brigade immediately.
Fire crews rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control quickly. However, the incident caused a significant amount of electrical damage which is being investigated and assessed.
“A team of electricians are currently repairing the damage,” the spokesman said. “Power has now been restored to all of the first floor, second floor and annexe areas.
“Work is ongoing to complete repairs required to other areas of the building. All students and staff have been notified, and classes affected by the closure will be rescheduled.”
MTU said it will continue to provide updates on the building’s reopening and the rescheduling of classes, and further information will be shared as soon as it becomes available.
