Torrential rain that pummeled Cork was not enough to dampen the spirits of hundreds of people who flocked to Jackie Lennox’s for the penultimate day of trading at the famous chip shop.
The deluge did not deter those who waited patiently for more than 2.5 hours to get their last portion of Cork history into their bellies.
A sea of umbrellas bopped along the footpath as people braced wind and heavy rain to get one last taste of their favourite bites from the legendary chipper, which will close its doors on Sunday night after 73 years of trading.
As flooding was reported in parts of Cork city and county on Saturday afternoon, people flocked to Bandon Road and joined the growing queue, as the countdown to the last supper from Lennox’s was on its penultimate day.
On Sunday night at 9pm, the doors are set to close for the last time, after brother and sister Brian and Frances Lennox, announced they were closing the business, with the loss of 30 jobs.
Their father Jackie founded the business in 1951.
Many people who enjoyed the taste of Lennox’s during their college years in Cork city have returned to the Bandon Road for one last taste of nostalgia since the announcement, while others have brought their children along to get a glimpse of what was an institution in Cork.
