A boil water notice has been introduced in one Cork town and night-time restrictions have been introduced in another after the weekend storms.
Uisce Éireann issued a boil water notice on Monday to the almost 4,200 customers who are supplied by the Macroom public water supply — just five days after a previous boil water notice was lifted.
The utility said it is working to safely lift the latest notice as quickly as possible.
It said that, following consultation with the HSE, it took the decision to issue this latest notice due to a combination of elevated levels of turbidity — a measure of the level of particles suspended in the water — and operational issues at the Macroom water treatment plant caused by the adverse weather during the recent Met Éireann status orange weather warning.
On Monday, the utility also announced that night-time restrictions are being introduced in the Clonakilty area of West Cork after the weekend storm affected the quality of the raw water supply.
The restrictions will be in place from 11.30pm on Monday until 6.30am on Tuesday in order to maintain supply.
It said high ground areas in particular will experience a reduction in pressure and flow during the restrictions.
“These restrictions are required due to a marked deterioration in the quality of the raw water supply and associated operational issues following yesterday’s status orange weather warning,” Uisce Éireann said.
“The measures are being put in place to ensure sufficient water supply to homes and businesses during day-time hours.
“We understand the inconvenience night-time restrictions can cause and want to thank the community for their understanding. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.”
Homes and businesses have been urged to be mindful of their water usage and conserve water to allow the supply to catch up with demand.
Uisce Éireann said it has launched a free text service, providing real-time updates for local issues, and said customers can sign up with their eircode and mobile number at www.water.ie.
