Met Éireann has extended their status yellow rain warning for Cork and Waterford - with seven other counties set to be affected on Monday night.

"Heavy and persistent rain" will move across Ireland on Monday evening.

The national forecaster has now issued two separate weather warnings as a result.

The first - which impacts Kerry, Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, and Donegal — will come into effect at 10pm.

The warning will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday, with the possibility of outdoor events being impacted by the heavy rainfall.

Other potential impacts include localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions.

A similar warning is being issued for Cork and Waterford - starting at 10pm and expiring at 11am on Tuesday.

This latest warning follows several wind warnings in parts of the country last week, as the remnants of Hurricane Ernesto hit Ireland.

Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather says the country is in for a “very wet night”, with the latest models forecasting up to 50mm of rainfall in parts of the southwest up until midday on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, rain will move "gradually eastwards over Ireland with the continued chance of spot flooding" in the morning. Sunny spells and "isolated showers will follow across the west" during the rest of the morning.

The last of the rain will clear from the southeast by around mid-afternoon, Met Éireann said.

Tuesday night will see clear spells and isolated showers with the showers becoming "more widespread across the western half of the country later in the night".

Wednesday will also see sunny spells and showers but Met Éireann says there are early indications of "drier and more settled weather developing during the weekend and beyond".
