Yet another popular Cork hospitality business has announced that it will soon close its doors for the final time.
The team behind Nell's Wine Bar at 39 MacCurtain Street has confirmed that Saturday, July 13 will be its final day of service.
Since it first opened in April 2022, Nell’s, which is owned Gavin Conaghan and his wife Áine, became popular with Cork patrons for its welcoming and relaxed vibe, its cheese and charcuterie boards, and its wide selection of biodynamic and organic wines.
In a review just last month, the
's Joe McNamee described a recent visit to Nell's as "a lovely experience with tasty food, some pleasing wines all served up in a very becoming venue".Announcing the closure in a social media post on Friday, the Nell's team said they were “heartbroken” and had "fought our hardest" to avoid the closure. However, they said the situation was now out of their hands.
They also thanked their staff, suppliers, and customers for their support over the last two-and-a-half years, and invited any voucher holders to come in over the next week or so to redeem them.
Nell’s Wine Bar is just the latest in a long and growing list of hospitality businesses in Cork to cease operations in recent months, with many citing factors such as the increasing cost-of-living, rising food and energy prices, higher wage costs, and interest rate spikes as playing a role in their closure decisions.
Since January, Nash 19 and Burnt on Princes Street, Pigalle on Barrack Street, Tung Sing on Patrick Street, the White Rabbit Bar & BBQ on MacCurtain Street, and Electric on the South Mall have all closed.
