Emergency services are currently attending a large fire that has broken out on the north side of Cork city.

Four units of the fire service are tackling the blaze at the National Recycling Centre in Churchfield - two units from the city, one from Ballincollig and a water tender. 

Authorities have advised people in the area to close the windows of their homes while firefighters are tackling the blaze.

The fire was reported at 7.45pm Friday evening and plumes of smoke can be seen for several miles.

The large fire can be seen from Turner's Cross, as the smoke spreads above the stadium.

The AA road watch has advised road users to avoid the area as "smoke is affecting visibility."

The fire has also led to traffic delays in the city, with traffic slow both ways on Mount Agnes Road, and further delays on Upper Fairhill.

Firefighters at the scene are using foam to try extinguish the fire that has been blazing for hours.
