A house in Cork City where two people were beaten by a gang, one of whom may have been armed with a machete, had been the subject of an attack days earlier.

Gardaí are now trying to establish if both incidents at the address in the Innishmore housing estate in Ballincollig, in the western suburbs of Cork City, are connected.

They are hoping that the victims of yesterday’s savage attack — a man in his 60s and a woman in her mid-30s, who are known to each other — will be able to shed light on a possible motive.

The latest incident occurred at an address in the Innishmore Square area of the housing estate near Christ Our Light Church at around 1am yesterday.

Gardaí said they and other emergency services were alerted following reports of an altercation involving a group of males at a house in the Innishmore Square area.

Eyewitnesses said that a group of between three and possibly five men was involved.

The man, who lives at the address, and the woman, who lives nearby but who has family connections to the house, were injured during the course of the assault.

They suffered a range of suspected laceration injuries and were taken to Cork University Hospital while gardaí sealed off the area as a crime scene.

The scene was examined by garda forensic scenes-of-crime investigators while gardaí conducted door-to-door inquiries in the area.

Gardaí said a number of items, including a golf club and hammer, were recovered by gardaí outside the property. They will be sent for forensic analysis to see if they can be linked to the attack.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Colm Kelleher said people were sickened by the violence involved.

“A savage attack like this can not be tolerated. I would urge anyone with information to come forward to the gardaí so that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” he said.

Gardaí are still trying to establish a motive for the attack and an investigation into all of the circumstances of this incident is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

They have appealed for witnesses and in particular to those who were in the Innishmore Square area shortly before 1am yesterday to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Togher Garda Station at 021 4947120, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
