A man who died violently in Cork city last June suffered a brain injury caused by cardiac arrest and a sharp force injury to his face and neck.

Cork Coroner’s Court heard this morning that Jason Butler, 32, was seen by Garda Paul Delaney on June 14 on Daunt Square.

Mr Butler was taken to hospital where he died on June 16. He was brought to the morgue at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem was carried out.

The deceased was originally from Castleredmond in Midleton, east Cork.

He died of hypoxic ischemic brain injury (a lack of oxygen to the brain) due to an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster said.

His cause of death was also given as alcohol and mixed drug intoxication with a sharp force injury to his face and neck area.

Pathologist Dr Sally Anne Collis carried out the autopsy on Mr Butler, Dr Bolster said.

A suspect has been charged in relation to Mr Butler's death and is before the courts, Sgt Fergus Twomey told Cork Coroner’s Court.

Coroner Philip Comyn adjourned the inquest without fixing a date, pending the results of the criminal prosecution.

Mr Butler was pre-deceased by three of his six siblings and both his parents.

He had been homeless before his death and was living in a St Vincent de Paul property.
