A 52-year-old man accused of stealing €20,000 cash during a burglary from an apartment in Cork and who allegedly left a pint glass of stout behind him at the scene was remanded in custody until January 16.

Sergeant John Kelleher said on Thursday the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial by indictment and also consented to the accused entering a signed plea of guilty at Cork District Court and to be sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge Mary Dorgan adjourned the case until January 16 on the application of Sergeant Kelleher at Cork District Court.

Diarmuid Kelleher, solicitor, said: “I need a precis of the evidence so that he can decide what to do [regarding the question of pleading guilty or not guilty].”

Evidence was previously given in the case against Martin Hurley, of no fixed address, by Detective Garda Conor Cronin.

The detective said the burglary was carried out on August 24, 2024, at Millerd Street, Cork.

“It is alleged that he entered the apartment complex carrying a pint glass with stout in it. This was captured on CCTV.

“It is also alleged that he entered an apartment and stole €20,000 from a bedside locker. He is then seen exiting the complex. The pint glass was found on the kitchen table of the apartment and it did not belong to the tenant,” Det Garda Cronin said.

The detective said gardaí in Dublin arrested him on August 25 and he was allegedly in possession of a quantity of drugs and €3,000 in cash.

He was later released in Dublin. It was only on October 14 the accused was arrested in Cork and charged with the Millerd Street burglary.

Mr Kelleher said a brother of the accused died in September last year and another brother died in June this year. Throughout this difficult period, the defendant stayed off alcohol but fell back into drinking in August and his life spiralled out of control thereafter.
