A man is being questioned in Co Wexford in relation to the discovery of a man’s body in New Ross on Tuesday morning.

An autopsy will be carried out on the man, who was in his 60s, to establish the cause of death. This will determine the course of the Garda investigation, which is being led from New Ross Garda Station.

Gardaí inquiries progressed quickly, and a man in his 30s was subsequently arrested and is being detained at a local Garda station.

The arrest was made at a nearby location shortly after emergency services responded to reports of an incident at Cluain Fada around 11am.

The older man was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Senior officers have allocated significant resources to the investigation as they await the autopsy results.

A Garda statement issued on Tuesday afternoon said:

“Gardaí are investigating the death of a man in his 60s following an incident that occurred in New Ross, Co. Wexford, Tuesday, 31 December 2024.

“Shortly after 11.00am, Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident at a residence in Cluain Fada, New Ross, where the man was found unresponsive.”

The statement said the man was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.

“A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident at a nearby location. He is currently detained at a Garda station in the Eastern Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984,” the statement continued.

This legislation allows for a maximum detention period of 24 hours, excluding sleep breaks.

The Garda statement added that the house has been preserved for examination by the Technical Bureau. The Office of the State Pathologist and local Coroner have been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

“A senior investigating officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation, and an incident room has been established at New Ross Garda Station,” the statement said.

“A family liaison officer (FLO) has also been assigned to support the family.” While Gardaí on the ground conduct house-to-house inquiries, they are seeking the public’s assistance in the investigation.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them and are seeking any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings, from those who were in the vicinity of Cluain Fada, New Ross, at the time of the incident,” the statement said.

Gardaí will begin identifying house cameras or any public CCTV footage that might assist their investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact New Ross Garda Station on 051 426030 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
