Up to 10 attempts were made by a man to stab and slash another man shortly after 5pm in Cork city centre and the investigating detective testified that the accused acted like the attack was “a badge of honour”.
Detective Garda Conor Cronin gave evidence at Cork District Court in the prosecution objection to bail being granted to Aaron Bohane who is charged with assault causing harm to Gavin Sheehan at Oliver Plunkett St, and producing a bladed weapon.
Det. Garda Cronin said the evidence against Mr Bohane was very strong. He said the injured party was walking along Oliver Plunkett Street shortly after 5pm on September 6.
He said that Mr Bohane, 24, was in a doorway on the street while a man with him was acting as a lookout.
“He gave Aaron Bohane a gesture. Mr Bohane removed a silver-coloured knife from the waistband of his pants and he viciously assaulted the injured party from behind. In the course of 16 seconds he attempted to stab and slash him up to 10 times.
“The male with him then strikes the injured party over the head with a glass bottle.
“The injured party had serious lacerations to his head, arms and back and was taken to Cork University Hospital for surgery,” Det. Garda Cronin said.
He alleged that the accused was arrested 10 minutes later and had blood on his clothing and shoes.
The detective said:
He said school-going children were among the members of the public in the area at the time of the incident which was captured on CCTV.
Shane Collins-Daly asked if a statement of complaint had been made by the injured party and if he had consented to gardaí accessing his medical records in connection with the investigation. Det. Garda Cronin confirmed that the complainant had done both.
Mr Collins-Daly said Mr Bohane, of no fixed address and originally from Ballincollig, County Cork, denied being involved in any sort of feud and said this was an isolated incident.
As Judge Mary Dorgan refused bail to Mr Bohane she described photographs of deep stab wounds to the injured party as nauseating. The defendant was remanded in custody until January 8.
