A security manager was assaulted by a woman in a supermarket when her accomplice stole a slab of beer.
Judge Mary Dorgan imposed a five-month jail term on 41-year-old Anita O’Leary, of no fixed address, for her part in the crime.
Sergeant Gearóid Davis outlined the background to the incident which occurred on August 15.
“Anita O’Leary arrived at Lidl, Cornmarket St, Cork, just after 8.30am in the morning with a man.
“She made her way to the off-licence area and attempted to move a pallet of stock used to block the entrance to this area as it was closed.
“While moving the pallet assisted by a man with her, the manager attempted to stop them from moving it.
“The man entered the off-licence and stole a €29 slab of beer.
“The manager attempted to stop him and asked him to return the slab of beer.
“Ms O’Leary began shouting at him and grabbed him to prevent him from engaging with her co-accused and put him in fear of being assaulted,” Sgt Davis said.
Earlier, on August 4, she stole two bottles of wine from Daybreak, South Link service station. The following day, she stole a bag of alcohol to a total value of €112 from Centra, North Main Street. She went back to the same store the following day and stole a small amount of alcohol.
Finally, there was a public order incident at St Patrick’s Street where she screamed at gardaí, “fuck off you scumbags”.
Joseph Cuddigan solicitor said: “She has pleaded guilty and saved people coming to court. She unreservedly apologises to the various people she had discommoded.
“She has had a very tough life. It is obvious (from her appearance) she was recently the subject of quite a brutal assault.
“She was living on the streets. She is very hopeful that one of the housing agencies will take her on. Most of her difficulties resulted from her abject living conditions. She will avail of addiction rehabilitation facilities in Limerick Prison.”
