Quantities of cannabis totalling €4,500 were found in the search of a flat at Washington Street almost two years ago and now the man who was in possession of the drugs has been fined and given a suspended jail term.
Judge Mary Dorgan said: “It was a significant quantity of drugs.” However, the judge said she was going to impose a non-custodial sentence because the accused man Charlie Gibbons had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty and had presented clear urinalysis.
Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said the matter had been adjourned a number of times for verification of the clear urinalysis and this was now available.
The search dates back to February 14, 2023, when the home of 28-year-old Charlie Gibbons — a flat at Washington Street, Cork — was searched after 6pm that day. The search warrant was executed after 6pm on that date.
The cannabis was in various quantities in the flat on that occasion, and when arrested and questioned he made full admissions.
Judge Dorgan imposed a four-month jail term suspended on condition that he would keep the peace for the next two years on the charge of having the drugs for the purpose of selling or otherwise supplying to others.
The judge also fined him €550 for having the cannabis in his possession for his own use. He was given seven months to pay this fine.
