The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed that two men who are among 10 accused of conspiring to import drugs into Ireland as part of an alleged international drugs gang be sent for trial at a Special Criminal Court.
A Special Criminal Court sits with three judges and no jury and deals specifically with cases involving terrorism and organised crime.
The two accused, Juan Antonio Gallardo, aged 56, of 12 Turina Street, Cadiz, Spain and Aleksander Milic, aged 27, of Svetorgorska 15, Flat 5, Belgrade, Serbia both appeared by video link from Cork Prison at Mallow District Court.
Court presenter Sergeant Linda O’Leary told the court that directions had been received from the DPP that both of the accused men would be prosecuted on indictment at a Special Criminal Court.
She said that indications were that a book of evidence would be served on both men in January.
Judge Colm Roberts remanded Mr Milic and Mr Gallardo in custody to appear again via video link on December 10 for an update on the progress in preparing the book of evidence.
The two men are charged with conspiracy with others to import controlled drugs in excess of €13,000 between February 27 and March 14 into the State.
They were arrested in West Cork when gardaí stropped a truck and an SUV at Tragumna Pier and a camper van in the village of Leap, as part of an ongoing operation into alleged organised crime.
