Sentencing of a 43-year-old man for importing €160,000 worth of drugs into Cork was adjourned until November 25 with the accused man remanded in custody until then.
Jessica Kelleher, defending, said that by consent of the prosecution the case could be adjourned until that date. Judge Helen Boyle acceded to the application to adjourn the sentence accordingly at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.
The case arises out of an investigation into an alleged €160,000 drugs transaction in a hotel car park in Cork. Judge Helen Boyle previously agreed to direct a prison governor’s report and also requested that he would be given whatever medical treatment he needed while in custody.
Julius Sobul, of Collingwood Avenue, Newport, Gwent, Wales, was charged by Garda Ruairi McGovern on counts that included, having more than €13,000 worth of cannabis for sale or supply and importing drugs with a similar value. €13,000 is a threshold figure for a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years unless there are exceptional circumstances.
It was alleged when the matter first came before the court that gardaí observed a transaction taking place in the car park of the Radisson Hotel in Little Island, Co Cork, between the occupants of two vehicles and when officers moved in to carry out a search they found €160,000 worth of cannabis and €39,500 in cash on the occasion on December 19, 2023.
The allegations previously outlined in court were that an English-registered Vauxhall and an Irish-registered Range Rover were observed by gardaí in the car park that Tuesday morning.
It was alleged that one man got out of the Range Rover with a package and got into the Vauxhall while the driver of the Vauxhall placed a large bag in the rear of the Range Rover. At this point they were approached by gardaí and informed they were to be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
The package placed in the Vauxhall was recovered and found to contain €39,500 cash and the large bag was found to contain approximately eight kilograms of cannabis with an estimated street value of €160,000, it was alleged by the prosecution.
