A Co Mayo man charged in connection with the seizure of a semi automatic shotgun in north Cork has been remanded in custody.

John Anthony O’Hara from Church View in Ballinrobe appeared before Judge Colm Roberts at Fermoy District Court on Friday morning.

He appeared on three charges – unlawful use of a 08-registered vehicle; possession of a 12-guage semi automatic Fabarm shotgun, and possession of ammunition, at a checkpoint at Baltydaniel, Mallow on Thursday.

Detective Garda Noelle McSweeney gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

An application for bail was made but was not granted by Judge Roberts after gardaí objected, with concerns about the seriousness of the charges against him.

The court heard that the accused lives with his mother in Ballinrobe and also stays with his sister in the same estate.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Mallow District Court via video link on Tuesday, September 17, for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

His solicitor, Matt Bermingham, said his client has concerns about where he would be detained, to which Judge Roberts said that the State is obliged to take those concerns into account when locating him in prison.

He added: “If he is in danger in certain places, it needs to be made known. He is entitled to have his safety maximised.”
