Man, 40s, dies after car enters Grand Canal in Kildare

A man in his 40s has died after the car he was driving entered the Grand Canal in Kildare on Sunday.

Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident which happened at Grangeclare West in Kilmeague at around 8pm. 

Though the man, aged in his 40s, was recovered from the water and treated at the scene by members of the National Ambulance Service, he was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.

His body has since been removed from the scene and an autopsy will take place in due course. 

The scene in Kilmeague has been closed off pending an examination by Forensic Collision Investigators and the Garda Water Unit. Access along the canal has also been restricted.

Gardaí have urged anyone with camera footage from the area at the time to come forward.
