A status yellow wind warning is in place for eight counties this weekend and Met Éireann has said snow is expected before Christmas.
The wind warning is in place until 2pm on Sunday for Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.
Met Éireann has warned the public of “difficult travelling conditions, especially near the coast” and of “fallen trees”.
There is also a risk of wave overtopping sea walls.
Sustained strong and gusty westerly winds veering northwesterly coupled with large coastal waves can be expected.
The forecaster noted snow could be expected in the lead up to Christmas.
Met Éireann says Sunday will be very windy, with blustery showers, some heavy with a mix of rain, hail, sleet and possibly some snow.
The showers will mostly be turning to rain and hail by the afternoon and become confined to the west and north.
Fresh to strong and gusty northwesterly winds can be expected on western and northern coasts. Winds will begin to ease towards evening. Afternoon temperatures 5C to 8C.
On Monday light rain or drizzle will spread eastwards through the morning and continue for the rest of the day. Light to moderate southerly winds will bring a change in temperature, with temperatures slowly rising to reach 10C to 13C in the afternoon.
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and St Stephen's Day will be mostly cloudy and dry, from some light rain or drizzle at times. During the day, temperatures will reach 11C or 12C with little or no change in temperature through the night.
