More than one million passports issued in 2024 as service sets new records

The Passport Service issued more than one million passport books and cards over the course of 2024, according to new figures.
January was the busiest month for the issuing of the documents, with more than 123,000 applications submitted that month. January 28 was the busiest individual day, with 8,363 applications sent to the Passport Service in just 24 hours.
The Passport Service's Customer Service Hub also handled over 561,000 queries during 2024, a record number.
Tánaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin praised the work of the Passport Service, saying the volume of applications it had dealt with during 2024, its centenary year, was "extraordinary."
“Despite this remarkable demand, the Passport Service maintained its service delivery targets, consistently meeting or exceeding turnaround times for virtually all application types," he said.
"This speaks to the efficiency, dedication, and professionalism of the team.” In 2025, the Passport Service said it expects to issue approximately 940,000 passports.
Mr Martin said the Service's level of achievement would not be possible "without the dedication, professionalism, and diligence" of its staff.
"They have ensured a secure and efficient service for Irish citizens across the globe, and I want to extend my gratitude for their continued hard work," he added.
Mr Martin said 2025 would likely be another extremely busy year for the Service, and he encouraged Irish citizens to plan ahead for their travels.
"I urge anyone planning to travel to check their passport’s expiry date now.
"If you need to renew or apply for the first time, I strongly recommend using Passport Online – the quickest, easiest, and most cost-effective way to secure your passport.”
