The head of television current affairs at RTÉ has announced he is stepping down from his role after 21 years, “to seek new challenges”.
During his time as managing editor, Paul Maguire spearheaded some of the state broadcaster's main shows, including
, , and .In a statement on LinkedIn on Sunday night, Mr Maguire announced his departure.
He said during his time in the role, he had “the privilege and opportunity to tell some remarkable stories while working with some of the most talented, driven and passionate people in the media industry”.
he said "has been a part of Irish life for decades and I could not have been prouder to work alongside such a dedicated group of journalists".
He described the show as a “trusted voice, tackling the toughest issues, telling the most important stories and offering informed analysis”.
He said
, which was first broadcast in January 2023 was an “opportunity to question those in power” and he described the team behind the Monday night broadcast as “inspiring”.However, it was
that he said was a team he is “particularly fortunate to have worked with".“Since 2012, we’ve dug deep into the stories that many others couldn’t, uncovering truths, holding power to account, and giving a voice to the voiceless," he said.
He said he is turning “the next page” and "the journey ahead is filled with possibilities” adding that he is looking forward to the future.
Prior to joining RTÉ, Mr Maguire hosted a current affairs breakfast show on LMFM called
where he won several radio awards before departing for the national broadcaster.
