The weather for the weekend will be mostly dry, and while it will be breezier than of late it will still be "relatively mild" for this time of year.

According to Met Éireann, high pressure is continuing to have an influence on our weather in the short term, but by next Tuesday it is going to turn "very unsettled" with spells of wet and windy weather.

The forecaster says it will continue to be "very mild" before turning a "little cooler" later next week.

On Friday, it will be mostly cloudy, but some "limited bright or sunny spells are likely." It will be dry in most areas for most of the day, with just a "few spots of drizzle here and there". Temperatures of 4C to 8C are expected.

Friday night will be largely cloudy with patchy, light rain and drizzle along with some mist and isolated fog. Temperatures may drop as low as -1C with some frost.

Saturday will again be mainly dry and bright, with "good spells of sunshine". There will be a few scattered showers around in the morning, mainly in coastal parts of the north and west, but by evening, some patchy light rain and drizzle will spread, along with some mist and hill fog.

Temperatures between 5C and 10C are predicted.

Sunday will be a "mostly cloudy day" with some patchy outbreaks of light rain and drizzle, along with some mist. There will also be a good deal of dry weather too. It will be a little milder and breezier than of late, and temperatures could reach 12C. Overnight temperatures will also be relatively mild — between 7C to 11C.

Monday will see a mix of cloud and some sunny spells. There will be lots of dry weather, but some scattered patches of light rain and drizzle are expected.

Tuesday will be a rather windy, cloudy day with a "good deal or dry weather" but some patches of light rain and drizzle will give way to "more persistent rain" which may be heavy in places.

Temperatures of 12C to 14C are expected.

Wet and windy weather will continue on Wednesday and into Wednesday night. The rain will be heavy at times in places and may lead to some localised flooding.

Heavy showers may become thundery and cyclonic winds, which are "likely to reach gale force at times" are also forecast.

By Thursday, it will turn colder and brighter with a mix of sunshine and showers, some heavy and thundery. Hail is also possible too.

Will there be a white Christmas this year?

Unfortunately, it's still too early to tell — according to Met Éireann anyway.

"It is still too far out to have any confidence in the forecast for Christmas Day," a spokesperson for the forecaster told the Irish Examiner.

"At present, the weather looks set to be unsettled in the run up to Christmas with alternating periods of mild and chilly weather.

"There’ll be rain at times and windy weather too from mid-week next.

"Unfortunately, it isn’t possible at this stage to give any indication of the weather type on the big day itself."
