Man arrested in connection with Creeslough explosion released without charge

A man in his 60s who was arrested by gardaí investigating the 2022 Creeslough explosion in Donegal has been released without charge.

Four men, three women and three children, ranging in age from five to 59, died in the blast that ripped through the Co Donegal village’s Applegreen service station and a nearby apartment block on Friday, October 7 2022.

The man was arrested on Thursday morning "for alleged offences contrary to the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997". He was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Garda North Western Region.

In an update on Friday, gardaí said the man was later released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions, said a statement. 

Gardaí said the investigation into the explosion is ongoing, co-ordinated from Milford Garda Station where an incident room has previously been established under the direction of a Garda Senior Investigating Officer.

The investigation continues to be led by local gardaí in the Donegal Division, supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) and other agencies including the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) and the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU).

Robert Garwe and his five-year-old daughter Shauna Flanagan-Garwe, Catherine O’Donnell and her 13-year-old son James Monaghan, fashion student Jessica Gallagher, Celtic fan Martin McGill, James O’Flaherty from Sydney, Australia, shop worker Martina Martin, carpenter Hugh “Hughie” Kelly and 14-year-old Leona Harper were killed in the explosion.
