Some 60,839 students who sat their Leaving Certificate exams in June will receive their results at 10am. The results are available to access through the online candidate self-service portal.
Although we’re very much in a post-pandemic world now in 2024, a covid hangover looms large over State examinations in Ireland.
After students received predicted grades at the beginning of the pandemic which led to much higher performance, the Government vowed there would be no “cliff edge” for the subsequent Leaving Certificate years.
While students have been sitting their exams in recent years, there have been post-marking “adjustments” made to boost the grades to the same on aggregate as the previous year.
In April, Education Minister Norma Foley said that this year’s class would have the same inflation applied.
The figures out today show that 68% of all grades were increased following the marking process, compared to 71% in 2023 and 50% in 2022.
The first round of college offers will be made available through the CAO next Wednesday at 2pm.
Students will also receive the offers by email and text. They will have until the following Tuesday, September 3, at 3pm to accept whatever offer they may have received.
Despite this Government commitment to avoid the “cliff-edge” and for results to be broadly similar to last year, there’s no guarantee that the CAO points will be the same for each course in 2024.
The points requirements for particular courses can change due to supply and demand each year, but last year's CAO points totals can at least give an indicator of the ball-park figure for particular courses.
Students will only have a few days to wait to find out if they got their first choice.
If you think you should have received more marks in a particular exam and want it rechecked, you need to act fast.
On Tuesday, August 27, you can apply to see the marks you got for each of your exams, each component if applicable, and the post-marking adjustment.
Applications then open to appeal the results on the candidate self-service portal from 10am on Sunday, September 1, and close at 5pm on Monday September 2. Late applications are not accepted.
You should also note that it costs €40 per subject to appeal. However, if your appeal is successful and your subject result is upgraded, you will get a refund of the appeal fee for that subject.
